The Swiss Arbitration Association (ASA), in collaboration with the Istanbul Arbitration Centre (ISTAC),
is organizing the first ASA Arbitration Retreat in Türkiye. This retreat, in the form of a practice
seminar, follows a format that ASA originally developed in 1997 and has since been used in annual
seminars co-hosted by ASA with other arbitration associations and institutions across Europe and
Asia.
The Format
Over the course of two days, the seminar consists of a series of sessions that cover the key phases of an
arbitration proceeding. Two discussion leaders – one with a civil law background and the other with a
common law background – guide participants through significant legal and practical issues that can arise
during an arbitration. These experienced practitioners use examples from real cases to illustrate
various issues and potential solutions. This approach fosters lively debates among discussion leaders
and participants, highlighting the diversity of experiences and methods in international arbitration,
promoting the exchange and development of new ideas and practices, and encouraging cross-cultural
awareness. The seminar will be conducted in English.
Who Should Attend
This seminar is not intended for true beginners; it is designed for those looking to further enhance
their knowledge and practice of international arbitration. Participants will benefit from the collective
experience and expertise of their peers, gained from various arbitration proceedings in different
jurisdictions. Instead of traditional lectures, the seminar encourages participants to contribute to the
discussions with their own experiences, questions, and ideas, facilitated by the discussion leaders.
